Ungoliant and Melkor by rubendevela Ungoliant and Melkor by rubendevela
Edit, 2014: Uh so apparently Peter Jackson liked this old painting of Ungoliant well enough, that it will be included on the dvd/bluray of the behind the scenes release for The Hobbit 2! 0_0

This redone version with slightly adjusted lighting will appear in the mini-documentary about Ungoliant, Shelob, and the other spider monsters from the lore!

Ungoliant and Melkor/Morgoth contesting ultimate power

Edit: Added bristly spider hair and adjusted the shading.

Congrats on being featured on the dvd/bluray! I was suprised when I found out that this picture is actually an artwork :D
It is a awesome artwork and I like you design of Ungoliant with being this massive, great job!
Bakuraac Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2015
The scariest thing about Ungoliant, IMHO, isn't that she's the precursor of giant spiders, nor is it solely the fact that she ATE a bunch of silmarils and now rivals Morgoth (at the height of his own) in power.

It's the fact that she's still there.

Years and decades and centuries and long millenia after Morgoth is banished to the Halls of Mandos, long after Numenor sinks, a great deal of time after Sauron is destroyed... This near-Lovecraftian-esque avatar of neverending hunger and nihlism is still lurking somewhere.

You did a bang-up job depicting her immensity. Very representative of what she represents, if that makes sense.
Finndleton Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2015
I read that Ungoliant eventually ate herself because she couldn't satisfy her endless hunger, and Shelob was her last surviving offspring.
Bakuraac Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2015
As far as I am aware, that is a supposition made by Elven historians who were confused as to why Ungoliant hadn't been seen since she ate the Silmarils.

Oh, wow.  Congratulations!  If any picture would deserve to go in the dvd, it would be this.  It's absolutely amazing.

I doubt they'll ever make the Silmarillion, but I wish they would, for the sole purpose of seeing Ungoliant, Ancalagon, and Glaurung animated.

You, Morgoth, I know you're the origin of all evil and you feel like you've got a reputation to keep, but you really should consider just giving the world-devouring spider queen the damn shiny rocks.

That is exactly how I thought of it in my mind, when she demands the Silmarils from Melkor. Great work!!.

Ungoliant: "Give it to me... i must have it... precious treasure... I DESERVE IT!"
Melkor: - Where can i run, where can i hide the Silmarils!?; "Gems of Treelight,... THEIR LIFE BELONGS TO ME!"

Epic picture of the epic scene from holy bible of fantasy genre.

I always liked that the two greatest evils of middle earth were warring against each other for dominance. The added irony I noticed was (in the book) Two Towers, Shelob's brief backstory indicates Sauron begrudgingly fears/respects the descendant/reincarnation of Ungoliant. This is one of those scenes I want to see played out, between the fallen god Melkor/Morgoth face against the queen of Spiders (Lloth? Fuck no!) Ungoliant.

Paul774 Featured By Owner Dec 29, 2012
The Silmarillion never says how huge she was in comparison to Melkor, so it's up to you to interpret the scene and to give her the size you want her to have... brilliant job and maybe the best depiction of Ungoliant i've ever seen
flerpaderpus Featured By Owner Dec 28, 2012
I read Silmarillion a while back, and while I always thought of Melkor as being considerably larger than a normal human (I dunno why, I guess I thought of them all like the Makers from Darksiders), this is INCREDIBLE.
Igor-Son-Of-Gondor Featured By Owner Jan 11, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
he is large. Fingolfin was a tall elf (so probably taller than any human) and when he dueld the dark lord, Morgoth stood over him like a tower. so i imagine he was at least 5-6 meters high. if any higher i dont know how fingolfin managed to wound him 7 times.
flerpaderpus Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2013
I know Morgoth is big... but Ungoliant? Was Ungoliant really that gigantic?
Igor-Son-Of-Gondor Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Her size is left to your imagination :)
"But Ungoliant was unafraid, for she had grown monstrous and strong, and he was less because of the power that had gone forth from him, and she rose against him, and she cast upon him nets of thick and sticky web to strangle him."
flerpaderpus Featured By Owner Jan 17, 2013
Ah okay. Haven't read Silmarillion in some time. I still like the story with the dog that bites off the guy's hand. I forget everyone's names, sadly. Perhaps I should reread.
Igor-Son-Of-Gondor Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Yes, you speak of the great wolf Carcharoth (or Anfauglir), the greatest werewolf who ever lived. Morgoth had personally bred him to guard the gates of Angband. He bit off Beren's hand that held the silmaril :)
I read it like 3 months ago and have already forgoten much. The problem is that there are many stories compressed in it and way too many names to remember. But that is the beauty of Tolkien's works. Cheers :)

I just realized that that's pretty much the binding of Fenrir, except that Ferir hadn't done anything bad before.
