Ungoliant and Melkor by rubendevela Ungoliant and Melkor by rubendevela
Edit, 2014: Uh so apparently Peter Jackson liked this old painting of Ungoliant well enough, that it will be included on the dvd/bluray of the behind the scenes release for The Hobbit 2! 0_0

This redone version with slightly adjusted lighting will appear in the mini-documentary about Ungoliant, Shelob, and the other spider monsters from the lore!

Ungoliant and Melkor/Morgoth contesting ultimate power

Edit: Added bristly spider hair and adjusted the shading.

I've always pictured Ungoliant and Melkior being roughly the same size....
Well, I guess she got bigger after she fed...

I see. By the way, do you have any plans to do more Tolkien characters? Because I have a few ideas for characters you could do pictures for. Like Tevildo, Prince of Cats or Fankil (Melkor's lieutenant before Sauron). You can read about them in Christopher Tolkien's "History of Middle-earth" series.

What I really like about this piece is the sense of scale.  It really shows how overwhelmingly powerful Ungoliant would have to be to scare even Morgoth, how she's something he could never hope to control or destroy.  Morgoth towered over Fingolfin...Ungoliant towers over Morgoth.

The scariest thing about Ungoliant, IMHO, isn't that she's the precursor of giant spiders, nor is it solely the fact that she ATE a bunch of silmarils and now rivals Morgoth (at the height of his own) in power.

It's the fact that she's still there.

Years and decades and centuries and long millenia after Morgoth is banished to the Halls of Mandos, long after Numenor sinks, a great deal of time after Sauron is destroyed... This near-Lovecraftian-esque avatar of neverending hunger and nihlism is still lurking somewhere.

You did a bang-up job depicting her immensity. Very representative of what she represents, if that makes sense.

I read that Ungoliant eventually ate herself because she couldn't satisfy her endless hunger, and Shelob was her last surviving offspring.

As far as I am aware, that is a supposition made by Elven historians who were confused as to why Ungoliant hadn't been seen since she ate the Silmarils.

Oh, wow.  Congratulations!  If any picture would deserve to go in the dvd, it would be this.  It's absolutely amazing.

I doubt they'll ever make the Silmarillion, but I wish they would, for the sole purpose of seeing Ungoliant, Ancalagon, and Glaurung animated.

I actually heard Peter Jackson is planning to put the Silmarillion to the big screen. I hope he does, I want more tales of Arda on the big screen.

I think there's a copyright rule from the Tolkien Estate that forbids the creation of more Tolkien film adaptations until it expires in another couple decades.

I think it would probably be best if they don't make films based on the Silmarillion tales, or if they do that they tread very carefully. Although, even if they did wind up failing to make them perfect, it would still be totally worth it so long as they did the same brilliant job with characters like Glaurung and Ungoliant that they did with Smaug in the Hobbit films!

Perhaps Silmarillion films would work well if they were as stories within a story (i.e., a framing device where someone is telling the legendary story which the majority of the film portrays).

Yeah, not long after I posted that comment I found out about the copyright block the family put on it, which sucks. I wasn't talking about having each individual story being its own movie, that's way too many stories to put into a movie. Rather, a series would be better where it's set up like Stephen King's Creepshow movies, where you have one guy telling the stories and each one is made into a little short film, then tied together into a single movie via intermissions. We'd have maybe four to six of these movies (it's been a while since I've read the Silmarillion so I forget the exact number of stories within it), with each one having four or so stories told.

Copyright law says 2044 if it were other parts of the Tolkien franchise. Unfortunately, if The Slimarillion can be considered "jointly authored," that date would be at least 2087.
